FPT accompanies Vietnam in pioneering the new wave of semiconductors and next-generation electronics industries
At the 6th Make in Vietnam Forum, Mr. Trần Phú Sơn – Business Development Director of FPT Semiconductor, along with leaders from the Ministry of Information and Communications and enterprises, discussed, analyzed opportunities, and proposed strategies for developing the semiconductor industry alongside the advanced electronics industry, helping Vietnam rise in the new era.
Seminar session “Vietnam Semiconductor Industry C=SET+1 – A Driving Force for National Development” at the 6th National Forum on Developing Digital Technology Enterprises in Vietnam.
The 6th National Forum on Developing Digital Technology Enterprises in Vietnam is an annual event organized by the Ministry of Information and Communications. In 2024, the event is themed “Mastering Digital Technology, Leading Vietnam’s Digital Transformation with Digital Technology Enterprises from Vietnam.”
The forum saw the participation of numerous representatives from domestic research and training organizations; associations in the field of information technology; Make in Vietnam digital technology enterprise groups; experts in the field of digital technology; economic-trade organizations, research and training institutions; several diplomatic organizations; multinational digital technology corporations; and representatives of foreign investors in Vietnam.
Speaking at the opening of the seminar session “Vietnam Semiconductor Industry C=SET+1 – A Driving Force for National Development,” Mr. Nguyễn Khắc Lịch, Director of the Information and Communications Technology Industry Department, Ministry of Information and Communications, shared: “Resolution 57 of the Politburo has set the goal of autonomy and competitiveness in technology, especially strategic technology. Therefore, Vietnam must master strategic technologies to lead its digital transformation process. Only then can Vietnam achieve sustainable development.”
Particularly, semiconductor technology is considered the nation’s key technology in the new era. Mr. Lịch shared the strategy laid out for the development roadmap of Vietnam’s semiconductor industry from now until 2030, with a vision toward 2050, based on the formula: C = SET + 1. Here: C: Chip (Semiconductor Chip); S: Specialized (Specialized, Specialized Chips); E: Electronics (Electronics, Electronics Industry); T: Talent (Talent, Workforce); +1: Vietnam (Vietnam as a new, safe destination in the global semiconductor supply chain). Focusing on the development of specialized chip lines can be seen as a suitable direction for latecomer countries like Vietnam, due to their high applicability, widespread use in electronic devices, and optimized implementation costs. This is also the foundation for creating a next-generation electronics industry – an industry utilizing specialized chips and AI integration.
Mr. Trần Phú Sơn – FPT Corporation sharing at the seminar session
Analyzing Vietnam’s advantages in relation to the development capacity of the semiconductor industry and the electronics industry, Mr. Trần Phú Sơn – Business Development Director of FPT Semiconductor, FPT Corporation, shared: “Currently, according to the General Statistics Office, the electronics industry holds a pivotal position in the economy and has a strong ripple effect on other industries. Electronics exports reached $132 billion (2024) and are expected to increase to $160 billion by 2025. Therefore, the demand for manufacturing electronic products and smart devices still has much potential. Meanwhile, Vietnam has a strong IT industry ecosystem in terms of workforce and technology, which helps promote the integration of hardware and software, thereby supporting advanced technological solutions.”
4 approaches by FPT to accompany and promote the semiconductor wave.
To accompany and promote the semiconductor wave, alongside the next-generation electronics industry, Mr. Sơn proposed 4 approaches. Firstly, FPT continues to focus on outsourcing services for semiconductor design and manufacturing, leveraging its extensive network of foreign customers to provide chip design outsourcing services. Secondly, designing and manufacturing chips based on actual customer needs, with a current focus on power chip lines. Thirdly, training and developing semiconductor talent. Finally, strengthening R&D for next-generation electronic devices, such as integrating AI and semiconductors and developing IoT and AI on edge devices based on semiconductor platforms.
“In the context of the nation entering a new era of growth, FPT is committed to accompanying the government and enterprises in promoting innovation, creating technological breakthroughs, increasing autonomy, confidence, self-reliance, resilience, and national pride, bringing Vietnamese intelligence to the global stage,” affirmed Mr. Trần Phú Sơn.
Currently, in the field of semiconductor chips, FPT is the first Vietnamese company to design commercialized chips, with orders for 70 million chips for Japan, South Korea, Taiwan (China)… and partnerships with numerous organizations and companies worldwide.
