FPT IS forms strategic partnership with Da Nang to promote semiconductor and AI market growth
On August 30, FPT IS Company Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish a strategic partnership with Da Nang Department of Information and Communications, aiming to drive investment in research and development of technology and human resources in the semiconductor and AI sectors. This collaboration is expected to position Da Nang as one of Vietnam’s leading technology “hubs”.
Semicon Da Nang 2024 was held from August 29 to 30 at the Ariyana Convention Centre in Da Nang’s Ngu Hanh Son District. The event attracted leaders and representatives from the Government, ministries, departments, and foreign diplomatic missions in Vietnam. Leaders from central agencies in Da Nang, domestic and international business associations, and key partners of the city involved in investment promotion activities were also present.
Leaders and representatives of the Government, Da Nang, and businesses at the event.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Le Trung Chinh, Chairman of Da Nang People’s Committee, stated: “The semiconductor sector is one of the important high-value industries, projected to generate $620 billion in revenue by 2024 and to sharply increase to $1 trillion by 2030. Vietnam currently has various opportunities and advantages to join in this billion-dollar global supply chain. Da Nang, in particular, boasts significant strengths for semiconductor development, including a well-trained, highly qualified workforce, modern unified infrastructure, convenient transportation, especially support from the Government leaders and proactive efforts of local authorities to create a legal corridor and preferential mechanisms for specific investments in the semiconductor industry.”
“With the goal of ‘leading the way and moving swiftly’ in developing human resources for Vietnam’s semiconductor industry, Da Nang looks forward to contributions of investors, businesses, and experts in shaping and guiding the industry’s development. Hence, an open investment environment with appropriate support mechanisms and preferential policies can be created, enabling rapid and efficient investment opportunities in this field,” affirmed Mr. Chinh.
With its commitment to helping Da Nang become a “hub” for the semiconductor industry in Vietnam and the region, at the event, FPT IS signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to form a strategic partnership with Da Nang Department of Information and Communications. The partnership aims to leverage Da Nang’s strengths and advantages in semiconductor microchips, as well as collaborate on initiatives and solutions for high-quality human resources training and advanced technology, thereby attracting effective investment to the city.
FPT commits to supporting Da Nang in becoming a major semiconductor hub in Vietnam.
Specifically, FPT IS will support Da Nang in the following areas: training human resources, providing scholarships, offering internship opportunities for local university students, and establishing the FPT IS Research and Development Center at Software Park No. 2, focusing on information technology products, semiconductor technology, and artificial intelligence. These initiatives are expected to promote the development of technology sectors throughout the city, with a particular emphasis on AI and semiconductor chips.
At the event, FPT IS leaders reiterated their commitment: “With our experience in designing ‘Make in Vietnam – Made by FPT’ chips and leveraging our team of experts at the R&D center in Da Nang, FPT IS is dedicated to helping the city achieve its goal of becoming one of Vietnam’s top three semiconductor hubs.”
In the semiconductor field, FPT is the first Vietnamese company to design commercial chips, securing orders for 70 million chips from Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, etc., and collaborate with numerous global organizations and companies. In terms of resource development, FPT offers a range of training programs in the chip sector, from university and college courses to short-term programs, and other programs in collaboration with leading overseas Vietnamese experts. FPT also partners with universities worldwide, providing opportunities for students to study both domestically and internationally, and gain practical experience with foreign enterprises. This approach aims to rapidly expand the talent pool, supporting the Vietnamese Government’s goal of developing 50,000 to 100,000 staff in the semiconductor industry by 2030.
In 2023, FPT IS established an R&D Center in Da Nang with the aim of expanding to 500 product development staff within three years and creating 15 new product lines. Therefore, FPT in general and FPT IS in particular can address in-depth digital transformation challenges swiftly and radically, fostering an environment that attracts and nurtures technological talents, and positioning Da Nang as a hub for new technology products that can compete in both domestic and international markets.
Additionally, FPT has been involved in various projects in Da Nang for nearly 20 years. Notably, FPT developed the FPT Complex, which was recognized by the Vietnamese Prime Minister in March 2023 as the first centralized IT park in Da Nang funded by private sector. In the field of education, FPT Education in Da Nang has trained 15,620 students as of June 2024. In parallel, FPT has collaborated with Da Nang on a comprehensive digital transformation journey. The partnership has focused on digital transformation and establishment of an expansive smart city across multiple sectors, including transportation, education and training, resources and environment, healthcare, agriculture, industry and trade, and communications.
