No “forbidden zone” in information security risks

Vietnam Security Summit 2023 – one of the largest annual events on information security in Vietnam – has recently taken place in Ho Chi Minh city under the chairmanship of the Vietnam Ministry of Information and Communications and Ho Chi Minh city People’s Committee, with the coordination of the Authority of Information Security (Vietnam Ministry of Information and Communications), the city’s Department of Information and Communications, and IEC Group.

Themed “Data Security: Protecting National Digital Resources”, the event aims to become a prestigious forum for policy and strategy makers, leading experts, as well as leading domestic and international solution providers to meet and discuss new trends in the field of information security and propose strategies and solutions to prevent and respond to risks in the cyberspace in the current context.

Delivering the opening speech, Mr. Duong Anh Duc – Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh city People’s Committee – says, the “Vietnam Security Summit 2023″ is an important event, providing organizations and businesses the opportunities to study, discuss, and connect to address the data security problems on national level. “I expect the event would be a place to exchange practical experiences to address information security issues that Ministries, Departments, and local authorities of provinces/cities are currently concerned about”, said Mr. Duc.

At the in-depth seminar themed “Data theft and fraud prevention solutions”, Mr. Le Hoang Duong – Director of Cyber Security Center, FPT IS – delivers a presentation on “Data security in the digital age: Risks and Solutions”. At the beginning of the presentation, Mr. Duong affirms that the risk of data theft has become greater than ever by referring to the 10 biggest data breaches in history, in which even tech giants such as Twitter, Microsoft, Facebook… have also been targeted for the attacks despite their world-leading security barriers. “Therefore, data protection is of utmost importance and there is no exception for any businesses, including those leading in the field of information security”, emphasized Mr. Duong.

According to IBM Security’s research conducted on 550 organizations impacted by data breaches in 17 countries and regions around the world from March 2021 to March 2022, 83% of them have had more than one data breach. The average total cost of a data breach is approximately 4.3 million USD, an increase of 2.6% compared to 2021. Attack techniques have also been increasingly diverse and sophisticated. Accordingly, data breaches related to stolen or compromised credentials account for the highest proportion, followed by phishing, cloud misconfiguration, vulnerability in third-party software…

Mr. Duong also adds, to minimize damage from data breaches, businesses and organizations need to enhance compliance with the DevSecOps product development process, implement proactive attack prevention measures, employ advanced and highly automated technologies to detect and handle incidents quickly and minimize damage.

Mr. Duong says, over the past 3 years, FPT IS has been implementing multiple DLP projects (Data Loss Prevention) – one of the important solutions in protecting data and preventing data loss for Ministries/Departments and banks, and has been highly appreciated by the customers. For example, after just 5 months implementing DLP at a large commercial bank, the system quickly detected 73 data breaches, helping the bank avoid a large number of dangerous attacks.

Currently, IT security has gradually been shifting from defense to early detection, prevention, timely incident response, and integration of security solutions into a centralized operating platform for businesses and organizations.
