FPT accompanies Ho Chi Minh City to improve urban traffic management and operations with “Made by FPT” technology on Metro Line 1
On March 9, Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien) was officially inaugurated at the elevated area of Ben Thanh Station, marking a significant milestone after more than two months of official operation since December 22, 2024.The inauguration ceremony was attended by leaders of People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, representatives of the Japanese Government, as well as senior officials from various central and local ministries and agencies.

Metro Line 1, stretching 19.7 kilometers with 14 stations, connects downtown Ho Chi Minh City with Thu Duc City. As the first metro line in Vietnam to include an underground section, it also features advanced construction technologies. The project is funded through official development assistance (ODA) from the Japanese Government and counterpart funding from the national budget.Currently, the line operates 200 rides per day from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., with each train capable of carrying nearly 1,000 passengers. Even in the early stages of operation, the metro has received a highly positive response from both residents and tourists, with peak daily ridership reaching up to 120,000 passengers.
FPT is honored to be the technology provider for the comprehensive software system powering Metro Line 1. This includes the electronic ticketing system (excluding paper tickets) on the “HCMC Metro HURC” app, automatic fare calculation and collection processes, customer experience management, and integration of various station devices such as credit/debit card readers, QR code scanners, and chip-based national ID (CCCD) readers. FPT also implemented the security control system, access gates, and an IT infrastructure with high flexibility and cloud security standards.
The e-ticketing system and smart ticket gates were rapidly deployed by FPT in partnership with Mastercard to ensure timely readiness for operation. This system offers flexible ticket purchasing and payment methods aligned with the Industry 4.0 trend. Notably, it allows riders to use their CCCD for identity verification and ticket access—underscoring Vietnam’s “Make in Vietnam” technological capabilities in this key smart transportation project.
Since entering operation, Metro Line 1 has served over 5,146,878 passengers, averaging 50,000 rides per day, and continues to receive overwhelmingly positive feedback. During the fare collection phase (starting January 21, 2025), the usage rate for ticket purchases via the HCMC Metro HURC app reached 25%, significantly outperforming other cashless methods (10% via Mastercard-linked bank cards and 1% via MoMo e-wallet). Particularly, priority groups such as the elderly, people with disabilities, and national contributors can use their CCCD to scan and access the metro free of charge. In March, additional ticket purchase and payment methods will be introduced to further promote cashless payment habits within the community.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Van Duoc, Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, emphasized:“The Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien Metro Line is not only a modern transportation project vital to the city’s socio-economic development, but also a strategic economic cooperation initiative between Vietnam and Japan—one that both governments have agreed to prioritize. Today’s inauguration marks the beginning of a new chapter in developing a modern urban transportation system.”
Mr. Nguyen Hoang Minh and Mr. Dang Truong Thach experienced the journey from Ben Thanh station to Suoi Tien station with Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Bui Xuan Cuong.

The inauguration ceremony of Metro Line 1 marks an important turning point in the transformation of Ho Chi Minh City’s urban transport model, opening a new chapter for the city’s sustainable development. The event not only marks a new step forward in the socio-economic development strategy but also creates a solid foundation to realize the plan to build an urban railway network of 7 lines, with a total length of 355 km within the next 10 years.
The successful operation of Metro Line 1 is a testament to the close coordination between stakeholders, in which FPT takes on the role of implementing modern technology solutions, while affirming its ability to master “Make in Vietnam” technology in deploying smart transport systems, contributing to promoting the digital transformation process and sustainable urban development.
